Innovations in Stone Treatment: The Role of Ureteral Access Sheaths

This study explored the effectiveness of ureteral access sheaths (UAS) in the treatment of kidney stones via ureteroscopy (URS), and examines how UAS use influences the risk of postoperative infectious complications.

The study, conducted on 369 patients with stones treated with URS, revealed that UAS can significantly reduce the risk of septic shock, a severe infectious complication. However, no clear advantage was observed in preventing fever or sepsis. The results suggest that further research is needed to better understand whether the reduction in fluid reabsorption load, mediated by UAS, can protect against the risks of severe infectious complications.
The baseline characteristics of patients remain crucial factors in predicting infectious sequelae.

This study opens new perspectives for the treatment of kidney stones, emphasizing the importance of a personalized assessment for each patient.
